Fragrances Stink!

If it smells pretty, clean or fresh….I’ll take it! Wait – what? Buyer beware! According to the EWG Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, artificial fragrances – like alternative facts – rank moderate to high when it comes to overall health hazards. YUP! It’s true! Fragrances stink on all levels.

So, what should the consumer do to make better and safer choices? This is a great question. With the answer being deciding where you shop and what you buy are the first two steps.

Let’s start with where to shop. Are you shopping at a health-conscious store? Does the store have policies that foster local farming, organic practices or higher standards? Is the staff educated? Can they effectively answer your questions or is a big fat “I don’t know” offered? Do they offer websites that might provide better answers – like EWG.org. A business is only as good as its employees. If the staff knows their stuff, you will get what you want, be educated, and satisfied. You might even learn something.

Next, consider what you buy. This might mean sticking with trusted brands. But what if you want something new? Unless you are a scientist or chemist – this is not easy to decipher the ingredients within your fav shampoo or skin cream. According to U.S. Researchers Report, one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are industrial chemicals. This little statistic includes such things as carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Currently, there are thousands of ingredients in health and beauty products but whether our very own FDA approves or regulates this is just not enough. Considering that your skin is your largest organ, you would think that the FDA would be more proactive in helping us all eliminate the possible toxins as they apply to beauty products. After all, everything you put on your skin is absorbed into your body. Think about that – if you are using a skin cream or shampoo that has toxic ingredients – you are putting poison into your body. YUCK!

Let’s just talk about fragrances.

One look at David Suzuki Foundation’s web article titled “Dirty Dozen” is eye-opening. You see, there are around 3000 chemicals used to create the sweet smelling and enticing scents found in health and beauty products. So, here is a smart insider tip – When the chemicals lists the word “Fragrance”, know this is used broadly and could be used instead of listing the dozens of toxic ingredients making the potion small better. Yes – dozens!
But what about PHALATES? These sneaky little additives are a cheap and effective way to enhance the performance of scents making them linger. But there is more to the story. The European Commission on Endocrine Disruption lists Phalates as a substance that interferes with hormone function. Wait – What? Simply stated Phthalates have been linked to early puberty in girls, reduced sperm count in men, and reproductive defects when the mother is exposed during pregnancy. This is not to say that the list of dangers and illnesses related to Phalates exposure stops there because it doesn’t. Fragrances and Phalates can trigger allergic reactions, asthma flair ups, liver and kidney problems as well as cause harm to wildlife and waterways. As we stated earlier – buyer beware.
